Magazine Advert First Copy

To create this I started by adding a plain black background fill colour to an a4 size canvas.

I then added different coloured brushes onto the page to create a spectrum. I then used gaussian blur to add a mixed in effect of the colours. This created my background

Thirdly, I chose my photoshoot image that I wished to use

I then cropped around the model I wanted to use and then placed it on my canvas covering half of his face.

Finally, before adding my text, I set the blend mode of the image to 'overlay' and then duplicated it for a sharper view.

DSLR Camera's as apposed to Big TV Camera's

In recent times, music video's, tv shows and even some films are now being shot using smaller DSLR camera's as apposed to big shoulder mounted tv style cameras. This is for many reasons, first of all it is much easier to carry around lighter weighted equipment, secondly the quality can be better as different lenses allow different types of light to be consumed and frame rate can constantly be changed.

To shoot my music video, I will therefore be using a combination of two camera's, these will both be DSLR. One is the Canon 550D and the other one will be the Canon 5D. It is usually not reccommend to use two different types of camera's however in this case as the two models are almost identical with only slight differences, I believe that the 5D will be better for some shots and vice versa.

To get my head around this new style of filming I had to first play around with the DSLR. These camera's have a main purpose of being photography camera's and can shoot some amazing imagery. I therefore firstly took some photographs while changing settings on aperture, then changed things such as frame speed to see differences and what works best.

I later used these settings on video mode as this is what my main intention in using the camera.

The first picture shows where the appeture is very low and clearly the background of my model (reece) is very blury and allows him to stand out.

The second image however is of Reece with a very high appeture setting, here, everything including the background is in focus.

Location Recce

Above are some shot's of locations I may use in my music video that I have access to. These include public places in Central London such as the greenery in front of Westminster Abbey, A skate park in North London, a set of hills on the outskirts of London and Alexandra Palace.

Idea Test?

I had an idea that I wanted to play about with, but I couldn't really tell if it would work unless I actually created it! So, I told my little sister to do a few simple things to try and portray the concept. Ofcourse, this is not any actual footage for my final music video, just a test shot. There will be continuity errors!

Screen Test

For the artists in my music video, I first of all wrote down on a sheet paper all of the people that I could use to portray an artist. After making this list, I realised one thing, none of these people are actual artists or have been in a music video before... which isn't necessarily a problem. However, how much better would it be if I could use REAL artist(s)?

So I contacted this underground UK rap group known as the 'Marvell Boys'

They have a fanbase of around 50,000 subscribers and listeners and get over 100,000 views on each of their videos. The kind artists agreed to let me use them in mu music video, fundamentally, this is a great time saver as I do not have to train someone how to behave infront of a camera.

Here is a clip I made of some of their work in a montage:

Diary Entry

So recently I have been planning to shoot my video with all the plans that I have completed. I had planned to shoot the first scene of my video last friday, however due to unfortunatley falling ill, I had to cancel on my artists and the shoot. However I will be shooting this week my first scene and other scenes that include the artists lip synching.

Hopefully, by getting these scenes done this week I will still be on time and will not be behind on my work. Planning wise, I am compelete and ready to film. I have only got minor adjustments to make now.

Diary Entry 7th October

Recently, we have been working on planning our album artwork for the digipack and the designs. I have sketched some ideas for the digipack which I have uploaded on the blog. I also done one photoshoot to try out some photo's with different angles and locations in order to play around with them on photoshop and see what I could possibly use for my cover. A video of this will be uploaded once I have finished exporting it.

I then went out to film and test different angles and shots. I also wanted to test some lighting effects such as natural sunlight and where its best to stand in relation to the sun. I then edited these shots to test reverse shots, split scenes, extreme slow motion and more.

I will be ready to shoot my music video with in the next few weeks and am very excited to do so!

Proposal

I will be using a current local underground group who I contacted to ask if I could use for my music video. They are a group of three young men all aged between 21 – 23, these will be my main artists within the video. I will also use some actors which I will hold auditions for.

For my crew I will be using myself as the director. My cousin, Wasim will be the main camera man along with me as he has experience in this field. I will also be using the help of my friend Jeffrey to assist me in setting up my scenes and helping me on the shoots.

The song I have chosen to assign my music video with is called ‘Believe in Me’ by Marvell. It’s a UK Rap song, with a slower pace than the conventional rap song and has quite a deep message. I have chosen to do this song because It works with the people I will be using and the fact that it has a deep meaning allows me to express my creativity in boundless methods.

I will be shooting the music video before Christmas 2011. This will give me enough time to re-film anything I don’t like in the original footage and also allows me enough time to edit my video exactly how I would like to do so.

For my shoot I intend to use 4 different locations. One location for each verse (3) and then one default, either studio or a good location shot which would show all three members of the group. I will need a tripod but will also be shooting a lot of free hand scenes for an effect. I will also use some shots of the group in black and white. There will also be shots of some actors who will be in slow motion once edited and I will use them to act out the story that the song is portraying.

Song Lyric Analysis

"Cleanin Out My Closet"

Where's my snare, I have no snare in my headphones, there ya' go, yeah, yo', yo'...

Have you ever been hated or discriminated against, I have, i've been protested and demonstrated
against, picket signs for my wicked rhymes, look at the times, sick is the mind of the
motherfuckin' kid that's behind, all this commotion, emotions run deep as ocean's explodin',
tempers flaring from parents, just blow 'em off and keep goin', not takin' nothin' from no one,
give 'em hell long as i'm breathin', keep kickin' ass in the mornin', an' takin' names in the
evening, leave 'em with a taste as sour as vinegar in they mouth, see they can trigger me but
they'll never figure me out, look at me now, I bet ya' probably sick of me now, ain't you mama,
i'ma make you look so ridiculous now...

[CHORUS]

I'm sorry mama, I never meant to hurt you, I never meant to make you cry, but tonight i'm
cleanin' out my closet, {one more time}, I said i'm sorry mama, I never meant to hurt you, I
never meant to make you cry, but tonight i'm cleanin' out my closet...

I got some skeletons in my closet and I don't know if no one knows it, so before they thrown me
inside my coffin and close it, i'ma expose it, i'll take you back to '73, before I ever had a
multi-platinum sellin' Cd, I was a baby, maybe I was just a couple of months, my faggot father
must have had his pantie's up in a bunch, cause he split, I wonder if he even kissed me goodbye,
no I don't on second thought, I just fuckin' wished he would die, I look at Hailie and I
couldn't picture leavin' her side, even if I hated Kim, I grit my teeth and I'd try, to make it
work with her at least for Hailie's sake, I maybe made some mistakes but i'm only human, but i'm
man enough to face them today, what I did was stupid, no doubt it was dumb, but the smartest
shit I did was take them bullets out of that gun, cause id'a killed 'em, shit I would have shot
Kim and him both, it's my life, i'd like to welcome y'all to the Eminem show...

[CHORUS]

Now I would never diss my own mama just to get recognition, take a second to listen who you
think this record is dissin', but put yourself in my position, just try to envision witnessin'
your Mama poppin' prescription pills in the kitchen, bitchin' that someone's always goin'
through her purse and shits missin', going through public housing systems, victim of
Munchausen's syndrome, my whole life I was made to believe I was sick when I wasn't 'til I grew
up, now I blew up, it makes you sick to ya' stomach, doesn't it, wasn't it the reason you made
that Cd for me, ma, so you could try to justify the way you treated me, ma, but guess what, your
gettin' older now and it's cold when your lonely, and Nathan's growing up so quick, he's gonna
know that your phoney, and Hailie's getting so big now, you should see her, she's beautiful, but
you'll never see her, she won't even be at your funeral, see what hurts me the most is you won't
admit you was wrong, bitch, do your song, keep tellin' yourself that you was a mom, but how dare
you try to take what you didn't help me to get, you selfish bitch, I hope you fuckin' burn in
hell for this shit, remember when Ronnie died and you said you wished it was me, well guess
what, I am dead, dead to you as can be...

[CHORUS]

Meaning:

His mother abused him and used him in more ways than one and so much so that he cannot forgive her because he's tired of having to deal with her. He loves his brother so much and he is waiting for when he actually discovers what their mom is all about-drugs and alcohol.

And Hailie (his daughter), whom he mentions in mostly all of his songs, Eminem loves her very much and he doesn't understand how his dad could have left him-especially when he looks at Hailie and sees how much she means to him and he he could never leave her even if he did/does hate Kim.
he is trying to "clean out his closet", or "get things off of his chest" and get over the things that his mom did to him that hurt him so much
but he just can't seem to do it because of how badly it hurt him on the inside, which is why Hailie will never meet his mother-because he doesn't want Hailie to get hurt, first of all, and he wants to get back at his mother

Summer Holidays Diary!

Bonjour! This is diary number 5 and I now have had 4 weeks off school and all i have to say is...
Wow! Well what a summer it has been for the music industry. Wretch 32 has gone number 1 with his single 'don't go' - this artist has been around in the underground music scene for years and has finally made it to number 1 nationwide, nobody thought it would happen! I really like the video he had to offer for this as it went so well with the song and lyrics itself:

On saturday I will be going to film someone as they have asked me to come along and help them, I will also be editing it. I can't give away too much right now but what I can say is that it will be amazing experience before my media project and I will post the video on here when it is complete!

Diary week 4

Equipment that could be used for my music video

Last lesson, we looked at some amazing (and expensive) equipment that we have the honour of being able to use for our music videos. These equipment were industry standard and great to see and use first hand! Above I have posted some images.

Diary Week 3

Bonjour! This is my third week of A2 Media Studies and I feel that I have been very productive this week! I have been undertaking auditions for my music video as I have chosen the genre of song I will be doing, 'UK Rap'. I will be posting images of the auditions very shortly on to my blog.

I have analysed even more music videos and covers which can be seen below, also I have experimented with other forms of uploading my projects and research onto the blog such as scribd, slideshare and more!

I have also subscribed to many youtube channels and blogs such as Vevo which show the latest music videos as they come out so that I can find inspiration.

OK Go - This Too Shall Pass Analysis

This music video is by far one of my favourites and again, it doesn't follow many conventional music video trends. As the video begins, the audience are already enticed due to the shock factor of seeing a man sitting down covered in red... possibly blood or paint? He then moves a car forward setting off dominoes and well... a chain of mania and hysteria has begun!

Throughout the video, whilst the crazy chain continues, members of the band are situated at certain places within the warehouse singing along to the song almost oblivious to the things going on around them.

The dramatic chain finally comes to an end with a big explosion of craziness and colour. At which point the band members all stand in front of a cannon each and are blasted with colours of paint.

The beauty of this video is that there is no after editing effects used which shows that although technology allows us to do amazing effects, we must not forget the art of naturalism. And this video here, is anything but techy!

J Cole - Who Dat Analysis

J. Cole's music video 'Who Dat' shot by 'BBGun' contrasts highly compared to the conventional videos out in this day and age. One clear indication of this is that the video has been shot all in one take with no camera cuts or transitions. I really like this style of shooting videos and am personally thinking of doing the same technique with my A2 coursework.

The video starts with a crane shot moving downwards to show the rapper walking across a urban train track. The camera slowly moves onto eye level as the artist follows the camera while he raps his lyrics. Different scenarios then occur as he follows the camera (again, all shot in one take) such as a whole army of followers shouting 'who dat, who dat' and later a group of cheerleaders that seem to be cheering him along.

After effects are then used to light a fire on the floor which trails him as he walks.

Overall, I believe this video has been shot and directed very intelligently as so much is done all i one take. The complications of it seem so simple when the video is put together which is the art of making a good music video.

Music Video Analysis

Chris brown's 'next to you' video begins with dialogue and two elated couples who seem deeply in love with one another. This initial equilibrium is immediately interupted by disaster when the female characters are taken away from their lovers. This alternation continues throughout the video when the audience are brought to an almost post-apocalyptic scene of the world; showing cracked concerete and broken buildings. Thunder storms are also shown in the sky to exaggerate the upsetting ambience. Spectacles of fire and people running around in panic is also shown as the female character attempts to re-uinite with her 'soul mate'. When the woman is seen being hit by a car, the imagery slows down completely corresponding to the music as the camera slowly zooms in to the artists face. At the end of video, the couple is shown back together, sealing their love with a kiss. On the Macro, this video is a typical love story with a huge twist in the middle... not so typical now.

Brief

A promotion package for the release of an album, to include a music promo video, together with two of the following three options:
· a website homepage for the band;
· a cover for its release as part of a digipak (CD/DVD package);
· a magazine advertisement for the digipak (CD/DVD package).

-------------------------------------------------------------------------

I will be creating a music video because I think it will be the most intresting, i recognize that creating a music video will be a challenge for me, creating a magazine would not challenge me due to having photoshop skills from AS media studies. Creating a Music video sounds very fun and I will be approaching it with enthusiasm.
